The Long March and In the Clap Shack

by William Styron

In The Long March, first published in 1952, unwilling soldier Lieutenant Tom Culver tells of military life and a thirty-six-mile forced march at a marine base in the Carolinas in the early 1950s. The play In the Clap Shack, 1973, is set in a Marine Corps urological ward in 1943. Private Wally Magruder is told he has almost incurable syphilis.
